HACIENDA DEL SOL

This is where my son & I stayed in Borrego Springs for the summer solstice celebration featuring Rick Shea & The Losin' End--kind of a supplemental to my piece in the 'Party' section...

I was in a retro mood, didn't want to have to drive more than a couple of miles, and didn't want to spend a lot of cash. The Hacienda del Sol fit the bill perfectly.

I chose one of the duplex units--the cottages don't have air and close for the summer. Affable manager Mike Gaffney gave us room #11. With brick walls and high-beamed ceilings the place holds the desert summer heat quite well. We turned the groovy orange key in the lock, hauled in our stuff, turned the air on full-blast and went for something to eat while the power company and freon went to work.

Looking as if it were decorated with yard sale finds and e-Bay scores, this place is a step back in time--or times. Red gingham curtains in the kitchenette, turquoise paint, a chrome and formica 50's style kitchen table (I surmise some travelers walked off with the matching chrome chairs years ago). I especially liked the cool clock radio built into the end table in the living room next to the sofa bed. Forever stuck on 7:55 until someone turns the knob. Notice the quaint 80's style lamp in neutral-tones with the staffs of wheat motif. No TV--even though there was an antenna cable run to it, there was no antenna. No phone, no high-speed internet--truly a get-away. As you can see, my son slept just fine...

It smelled like grandma & grandpa's house, but the super strength "Febreeze" we brought along took care of that. I would like to suggest potpourri in the rooms...

The grounds are beautiful, the place was neat and clean, and the pool was open all night. If you're ever in Borrego Springs--try it out--although winter may be a bit more pleasant...

Let's see how much The Brink's upload system crops off of the bottom of these babies...
Does anyone else have this problem? Is it my own incompetence-- or is it a plot against Macs?

People stop at my gas station and ask for directions to the town's only grocery store. I always tell them to look for the big sun on the Hacienda sign and take the next right turn. Did you know why the store is in the back of the parking lot facing away from everything? It used to be a bowling alley. Small towns...
