EDDIE HINTON TRIBUTE SHOW

Following the San Francisco screening of "Dangerous Highway", a truly motley group gathered for a drunken afternoon at Annie's Social Club on Folsom to pay tribute to the brilliant Eddie Hinton. Eddie, known for his brilliant songwriting, was not well known for his most important endeavour; turning Dan Penn on to acid. There were raffle tickets. Mark Eitzel, in all his glorious agony, won an Eddie Hinton cd. For a brief moment the wellspring of tears ever-present in his angelic eyes dissipated. There was music. Tom Heyman started off the show with some beautiful balladry and was followed by the sensitive Mike Therieau. I was confused. My soul was saved soon after by Mr. Chuck Prophet. Chuck, in all his sweaty rock and roll glory, stepped on stage with his band, threw on his beat up Telecaster and played, yes PLAYED. It was brilliant. He even remarked on stage that when he first heard Alex Chilton he wanted to make it with him. We were thrilled. We were surprised. It rang so true.

I was googling around trying to find out where I could see this film, and came across this observation.

"The viewing occurred at the Artists Television Access Center, located in San Francisco's Mission District.... where the hairstyles cost 20 times the wardrobe and hipster doofusism is alive and well..."

That's awesome, Reno. Alabama Ass Whuppin is the title of a really early Drive By Truckers record (the greatest living rock band on earth, no shit).

That ain't Jarvis. Just some punk with a hopelessly outdated brit rock coif. Shit, we should have been so lucky; Jarvis is like a god to me. He's like Sheffield's answer to Doug Sahm. Or Pittsurgh's finest: Tommy James & The Shondells. As well he should. Sheffield's a soulfoul steel town. The UK sister to Pittsburgh. Common Folk's is a classic. Ask Dan Stuart about the time we got locked in a pub there. They had tighter licensing laws then. We were broke down. Had nowhere to go--money to spend. So they locked up the pub WITH US IN IT.

This is important, Reno: did you like the Drive By Truckers? It's crucial that I know. John

holy shit, that must have been quite a night, will I read about it in the book ?

Sue`s old band Bark Psychosis`s singer/main person, Graham Sutton, produced the Jarvis solo album recently released.....he is a fully fledged paid up member of the Rough Trade Producers Union now. He does have god-like genius, Jarvis, I mean, no doubting it. what I like about him is the terrorist attack on Wacko`s big TV awards gig a few years back and the fact that Pulp were going for many years when they finally ripened in the turgid BritPop pig roast BBQ at Tony Blairs meet and greet room @ No 10.They and Jarvo knew how to conduct themselves when they joined the party, unlike some; whose surname ends in G and, of course, gappy DJ Allbran

John, even in Fresno we have heard rumours and fables of The Drive By Truckers, so we shined on Richard Thompson just so we could catch the Truckers' set at HSBG.

I was happier than a pig in slop. I went right over and bought "The Dirty South" at Amoeba on our way out of town. I must get more Truckers' albums. Where should I start?

Reno: You've got to get "Southern Rock Opera" first. It's a truly brilliant record. Next, "Decoration Day" is necessary. Get "Southern Rock Opera" and tell me what you think. I'll burn the other ones for you. Take care, John

Take is easy John. Let's not send Reno down some Trucker's box set road. Little bit goes a long way. You and that damned flag again, on your sleeve.
