KILLING A DEER FOR NO GOOD REASON

Twice in the past four days I have cut the throats of does on the San Pablo Dam Road in El Sobrante, CA. In the first instance, a beautiful doe jumped in front of my car and I hit her. She lay on the asphalt bleeding. It was late at night and I knew she would die. I pulled her off the road, held her down, cried and cut her throat; holding her until she died.

Tonight I watched a car in front of mine hit another doe. The driver never stopped. She stumbled for a moment, blood dripping from her nostrils, and fell to the pavement. I stopped and got out. I grew up around hunting and the like and knew she was dying.

The first driver who stopped offered to help me drag her into the brush. I tried to tell him she would die and it was heartless to let her suffer by dumping her body. He was only concerned other cars would be damaged and as soon as I asked him to hold her down so I could cut her throat he left, calling me crazy. The second driver who stopped asked what happened, I asked him to hold her down, and he said, "man, that's too much for me".

Life and death are too much?? Jesus Christ. What the fuck is wrong with this world. I sat on her torso and pierced her throat quickly, crying and hoping she would die soon. A man stopped his car and told me I had done the right thing. He held my shoulder and told her to "go ahead, girl, it'll be over in a minute". Then the cops showed up.

I begged them to shoot her and let it be over with. They told me to put away the knife or go to jail. I called them heartless mother fuckers and they told me to get in my car immediately or be taken to jail. By this time she had died. The man standing with me said, "go ahead, buddy, you did the right thing" and I left.

Welcome to the land of McDonalds, manicured lawns, and bullshit politics. The state of unfortunate realities. Deer overpopulation? We have cars and animal control. Life and death? Only in the movies, sir. It is beyond me to understand how a place like this can so fervently support human rights while ignoring the painful realities of mortality: let us all die, but let us die away from the lights and the noise of life. This is the smug self-righteousness that destroys the soul. Here are my boots, jeans, and knife. Live with it.

We are going to START OVER on the comments to this piece.... Mr. Murry, if you can't handle somebody calling your writing self-righteous than don't post it here at the brink. We tolerate many things here on the brink, in fact tolerance is one thing that we completely endorse. What we don't endorse are threats of bodily harm and psychotic fatwas. A line was crossed here, Mr. Murry, and I think if you look deep inside, you would agree with us. We welcome your contributions, and in fact many of us have enjoyed this piece. But we can't allow any further threats. Play nice on our playground.

nevertheless there's no denying that dan guy who called john self-righteous was a smug douchebag who hadn't the foggiest idea that john had the moral high ground...and i'd still love to meet him.

There IS no moral high ground when you make threats of bodily harm. That's the same fucking shitass attitude that got us into Iraq. Look people - I hate the concept of censorship and I really don't know what else to say here - except knock it off. This is a forum of ideas not a place to wag our dicks. People are entitled to opinions. If I say that I think from my life experience that the concept of a deer feeling pain is ridiculous because they have such small brains, do I have to worry that Mr. Murry is going come after me with a big knife? It's just an opinion. Like assholes, everyone's got one.

I grew up hunting deer and wouldn't be insulted by that comment. I thought the exchange was crude and entertaining. I also think there's no moral high ground. I think it was really funny, though. So did Dan Stuart. That's why we kept replying to each other. BTW, do you like our record, Danny Vinik? David Manning played violin all over it. John Murry

Furthermore, Mr. Manning, what the fuck does that mean that you would "love to meet him." Why do you keep saying that? Is that supposed to mean that you would love to bust him up and if you ever see him you're gonna beat the crap out of him? Or does it mean you want to have some kind of lunch meeting with him to discuss current events? What the fuck? It all sounds so childish. So jock like. What are we descending into? I'm sure you love your friend John Murry, but this isn't West Side Story. You can actually go to prison for making threats of bodily injury in print. Are you making that kind of a threat also? You know there are other blogs out there that you might enjoy more than brink. Have you seen the NRA website lately?

Yes, I liked your record. Bleak. Tragic.

Sometimes funny is hard to find if the words are used strongly. People need to be responsible for what they say.

All apologies.... but let's not pick on David Manning, I said all of that stuff. He was just meddlin', too. If Dan is sincerely disturbed by all this then I am truly sorry. Chuck Prophet told me he thought Dan would think it was funny. It's really all Chuck's fault, as most things are. May I, like Pilate, now wash my hands of it? John

To be fair, Dan Stuart did ask Murry if he was related to the Gein family? Weren't the Gein family known for their creative use of ball-sacks? Murry stayed on message. Give him that. And after Stuart's "glove" comeback, I wrote Murry off. Never thought he'd get off the mat. I know that film people are smarter and everything.... but damn, whoever the powers at be are, these Brink executives cut the best part out of this movie.... they really did. Disappointed as I am, in the end-- make no mistake, threats of physical violence are pitiful. Beyond contempt. Just lame-ass shit. But in this context? If Murry had aimed those threats at the White House, the mob would have cheered him on. I'd like to cheer Mr Stuart and Mr. Murry on-- for showing much more imagination than that. The Brink was really getting good there for a minute.

Easy Elvis, let's not bring the NRA into it. This isn't civics class, this is the Brink. Whatever that means. While we're at it, let's not bring the Beatles into it either.
