PRISONER IN AN OPEN CAGE

just found this nice poem about h4s (people on dependant visa, usually wives of professionals in USA on h1bs)

It has been long since I left
Left for the land, to live what I dared
Where freedom is worshiped
Where system is fair
I was led to believe so
Or else why would I flutter, why would I fly?
Leaving my world so far behind??

Why am I restricted, why am I a second class?
I am here legally, you welcomed me to this land
To support who is working hard
Building the nation, playing their part
Enough have I waited behind
Behind the window of inspiring views
Hopes, wishes, dreams coming true
In the home of the free and land of plenty
That is all I am entitled to
To the view of the world, where dreams come true

Where would I go, who would I talk to?
In the land of strangers, the culture all new
Most doors are closed, some even say don’t bother knocking onto
I don’t exist here, not even to few
You call me legal alien; I am not much different from you
I have dreams just as you do

Remember, you welcomed me here,
I didn’t force myself through!
I have followed your rules, the old and the new
I respect your laws, wouldn’t dare not to
What am I being punished for?
Barred from the basic human right,
To work and to provide for...

Is it really too much I am asking for?
The freedom to live and to contribute
To exist and to be independent
To reap my hard work and to utilize
To play my part, to be the view
Beyond the walls, you have locked me into
In the home of the free, and where dreams come true!

The foundation of American society is ultimately built upon racism slavery and inequality. All modern civil rights have been hard won ...just ask Martin Luther King or any black living in the USA today. Progress was made and then stalled under the Reagan administration and now under Bush it has taken a decided turn in the wrong direction. I do feel bad for the good hardworking people who have come here only to find that there is still a lot of ignorance and xenophobes here. The good news is that things are changing once again. The "good" americans are making their voices heard.
