STRAW HOUSE IN CITY

This is the R-40 house, a straw bale house built by my prof Julia Bourke. It is basically just that: timber frame, straw bales, stucco on the outside and the insde, without anything else. No wire mesh or anything. It is situated in the middle of a low-income housing project in Montreal. Materials are all natural or recycled. Solar passive heating, using fenestration towards the south and an exposed concrete floor for thermal mass, is sure to please the planet. With a house like that, goodbye suburbia, hello density.

Very nice. Infill is good. Not using too much sheetrock is even better.

The inside is actually mostly divided by either plywood painted with a milk based product, or a type of fiberboard with no formaldehyde content. So a very minimal amount of toxic emission.

Do any photos exist of the original timber frame while it was being built???- would love to see those... It's pretty unusual to see a 2 story straw bale

I could always ask, but what I know about it is that it's ballon framing, so the structural posts go all the way up to the roof.
