The homeless camp "Nickelsville" has moved again.

The tents moved from a church lot in Skyway to an industrial lot near 2nd Avenue SW and Highland Park Way, close to the spot where the first Nickelsville was set up last September.

The camp had been forced to leave previous locations within the city.

"This time they're on a lot owned by the Department of Transportation," said Nickelsville supporter Revel Smith.

She says it could be the permanent site for the camp, which will continue to operate under strict rules. "Nickelsville has had a great reputation with its neighbors all around, whether it was staying at church lots, Indian land, anywhere that it was.

It's been very positive."

The camp was named after Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, to call attention to the city's lack of shelter space and to protest the police sweeps of homeless camps. Nickelsville was forced out of Seattle nine months ago after a police sweep led to several arrests. It has moved several times since then.

"All Nickelsville wants to do is be a healthy, safe community," said Smith.

Dear Friends and Allies:

Greetings from the Nickelsville Central Committee.

We would like to give you a brief update on new developments in our situation. The July 6 deadline is still in effect (this is the date the Governor would like for us to vacate State property.) We are taking active steps to try to find an alternative permanent space.

Last week, we wrote and hand-delivered letters to more than 20 property owners asking them to let us stay on their land. We have not heard anything back yet but we hope that our pleas will not fall on deaf ears.

We are also actively site searching in person by locating properties which could accommodate us and directly requesting appointments with the potential landlords (knocking on doors).

We hope we will be able to find a place, but if we cannot we will remain on public property.
That is because we are members of the public with a terrible emergency, and that is who this land should help. We will need help from our friends and supporters and hope that you will be standing with us.

Please do sign our petition asking the Governor not to arrest us and not to destroy our home; here is the link:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/let-the-nickelodeons-live-in- peace.

Also, please call the Governor TODAY and ask her to extend the Nickelodeons'
stay on State land: 1-800-562-6000. (Please call again even if you've already called in support of Nickelsville; the urgent need today is for an extension on State land!)

We hope that Governor Gregoire will show us some compassion.
